Abstract
In the present study methanolic, aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of Myristica fragrans were evaluated using various in vitro antioxidant assays including nitric oxide scavenging capacity, total antioxidant activity and measurement of reducing power through hydroxyl reducing antioxidant capacity. The most prominent antioxidant activity was observed with the methanolic extract in the NO scavenging assay with an IC50 value of 473.40±0.69μg/ml as opposed to that of standard ascorbic acid and other extracts. The maximum NO scavenging was 79.1%. In total antioxidant capacity method, methanolic and aqueous extracts showed the highest activity. Methanol extract along with hydroalcohol were also found to exhibit significant and paramount hydroxyl reducing capacity respectively in a dose dependent manner.
